About the role

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Data Scientist based in India.

We are looking for an experienced Data Scientist to join a Trust & Risk team focused on creating a safer and more reliable global marketplace. In this role, you will lead complex analytical initiatives and develop quantitative frameworks to identify risks, improve decision-making, and reduce transaction-related losses. You will work closely with senior business leaders and cross-functional teams across Product, Engineering, Policy, Shipping, and Design. By combining advanced analytics, predictive insights, and strategic thinking, you will help balance customer experience, marketplace trust, and business performance. This is an opportunity to influence high-impact decisions, shape analytical strategies, and deliver measurable results in a dynamic, international environment.

Accountabilities

As a Data Scientist, you will turn complex marketplace data into actionable insights and strategic recommendations that strengthen customer trust and reduce transaction risk. Your main responsibilities will include:

-
Drive strategic insights: Lead strategic, operational, and analytical initiatives that identify opportunities to improve customer outcomes and reduce marketplace and transaction risks.

-
Investigate complex challenges: Conduct in-depth analyses of marketplace and transaction risk issues, identify key trends and underlying drivers, and recommend solutions that reduce losses for buyers, sellers, and the business.

-
Develop measurement frameworks: Define KPIs and standardized measurement approaches to monitor customer trust, transaction risk, enterprise losses, decision quality, false positives, residual exposure, and return on investment.

-
Monitor performance: Evaluate the effectiveness of existing strategies, diagnose performance gaps, and use analytical findings to guide priorities and business decisions.

-
Lead high-impact initiatives: Establish business objectives and success measures for workstreams focused on improving customer experience, strengthening risk and policy effectiveness, and delivering measurable business results.

-
Collaborate across functions: Partner with senior stakeholders in Trust, Risk, Product Management, Engineering, Policy, Shipping, and Design to integrate analytical insights into business strategies and investment decisions.

-
Influence strategic decisions: Communicate findings and recommendations to leadership, build cross-functional alignment, and help drive decisions across organizational boundaries.

Requirements

The ideal candidate combines strong quantitative expertise, advanced analytical capabilities, and the ability to translate complex findings into business decisions. The following qualifications are required:

-
Bachelor's degree with 5–7 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree or PhD with at least 3 years of relevant experience.

-
Experience in at least two of the following areas: Quantitative Research, Analytics, or Data Science.

-
Strong ability to identify trends, patterns, and business implications within complex datasets.

-
Experience developing analytical frameworks and translating findings into strategic and operational recommendations.

-
Proficiency in Python or R and strong SQL querying skills.

-
Excellent structured thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities, particularly when addressing ambiguous and cross-functional challenges.

-
Proven ability to independently lead complex analytical initiatives and deliver measurable outcomes.

-
Strong understanding of how to balance customer experience, risk management, and business performance.

-
Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, including the ability to present complex analyses clearly and influence senior-level decision-makers.

-
Flexibility to collaborate remotely across multiple time zones.

-
Availability for regular meetings between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT).

The following experience would be considered an advantage:

-
Background in marketplace Trust & Risk, fraud detection, or transaction risk analytics.

-
Experience building quantitative or measurement frameworks for loss prevention, decision quality, false positives, risk exposure, or return on investment.

-
Ability to simplify complex analytical findings for non-technical audiences.

-
Experience working at a leading technology company.

-
Familiarity with e-commerce products, online marketplaces, payments, or shipping.

-
