About the role
About GeoSoftware
GeoSoftware is a global leader in Geoscience Software and provides a comprehensive range of software solutions that support our clients to achieve their goals. Our tools help our clients to develop a better understanding of the subsurface, manage exploration and development risks and quantify reserves more accurately with our advanced geoscience technology.
Working at GeoSoftware is all about passion and sharing our ambition for ongoing technological innovation. We have more than 150 employees, spread over 18 different countries. Our people are our most important asset and developing our talents is a priority. As part of GeoSoftware, you will work with international and diverse teams of experts in an environment of excellence which will enable you to create your own opportunities and realize your full potential.
Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced front-end engineer to join our Digital Platform team.
You would build the interactive visualization layer of our next generation of geoscience software: a multi-view application that presents very large scientific datasets with real-time interaction, and stays responsive at data volumes far beyond what fits in memory. Rendering data of that size while keeping the interface fluid is the hardest visual problem in the application, and the one that is noticed first.
You would work in a small, senior, distributed team alongside computational and platform engineers, and with geoscientists who use the results professionally every day.
Duties and Responsibilities
Visualization and Rendering
- Build hardware-accelerated views over datasets far larger than memory, using progressive, tile-based, and level-of-detail loading
- Implement 2D and 3D scientific visualization: section and map views, volumetric display, quality-control plots and cross-plots—legible and interactive at full data volume
- Work with the data and compute engineers on the chunked read paths that make large-dataset rendering feel immediate
- Profile rendering and interaction performance, and optimize on the basis of measurement rather than intuition
Application Architecture
- Design the state and event architecture of the application: subscription, dependency tracking and invalidation across many simultaneously open views
- Ensure that changes to underlying data, to long-running job state, or to user parameters propagate automatically to everything that depends on them, without reloads and without unnecessary re-rendering
- Implement cross-view coordination: linked selection, interactive highlighting and a shared cursor across open panels
- Build flexible multi-view layouts—split, tabbed, floating and docked
- Express application actions and state as structured, serializable operations so that the interface can be driven by automation as well as by direct interaction
- Generate forms, dialogs and property editors from parameter definitions rather than hand-writing each one
- Design clean internal interfaces and extension points, so that new analysis views can be added by other engineers without modifying the core
Collaboration and Delivery
- Work in short iterations with continuous integration, code review and acceptance criteria agreed before implementation
- Work with geoscience domain experts to turn numerical output into something an interpreter can read and trust
- Contribute to the technical direction of a small team, and write down the decisions that matter
Skills and Competencies
Skills:
- Strong React and TypeScript, with a clear grasp of rendering performance, reconciliation and when to step outside the component model
- Event-driven and reactive architecture: observer and publish/subscribe patterns, dependency and invalidation graphs, state ownership, subscription lifecycle, and the discipline to keep change fan-out from becoming a re-render storm
- Live, server-driven state—WebSocket, server-sent events or change feeds—including reconnection, replay and consistency
- Real WebGL experience: shaders, buffer management, texture streaming and instancing, not only through a wrapper library
- Interactive rendering of large scientific or geospatial datasets, and the streaming and level-of-detail techniques that make it possible
- Fluency with profiling tools and the discipline to measure before optimizing
- Strong written English, and the habit of documenting asynchronously
Competencies:
- Ownership and self-direction
- Pragmatic judgement about where complexity is worth it
- Attention to detail and to performance
- Collaboration across disciplines
- Technical expertise (front-end engineering and scientific visualization)
- Alignment with company interest
Qualifications & Requirements
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience
- Minimum 5 years of professional software engineering experience, a substantial part of it on complex, data-heavy front-end applications
- Demonstrable React and TypeScript experience in a production codebase
- Hands-on WebGL, or equivalent GPU-accelerated browser rendering experience
- Experience designing event-driven or reactive state architecture in a large application
- Able to work effectively in a small, remote, multi-timezone team: writing things down, communicating asynchronously and operating without close supervision
- Fluent written and spoken English
Desired:
- 3D rendering experience—Three.js, WebGPU, or equivalent
- Background in scientific, geospatial, seismic or medical imaging visualization
- Oil and gas or geoscience domain exposure
- Familiarity with cloud-native, chunked array storage formats
- Experience designing an API or extension point that other developers build against
- Experience building an interface that is scriptable or automatable as well as interactive—a real command registry, a macro or automation surface, or a complete accessibility layer
- Electron, or desktop delivery of web technology
- Canvas, SVG and charting at scale; accessibility and color-map design
- Fluent with AI coding tools for prototyping, test generation and refactoring, with the judgement to know where their output must be verified rather than trusted
