Design Manager

This position is to act and deliver results as follows:
In collaboration with the Development team and Director of Design, implementing the CyrusOne standard design (building, data halls, facility security), physical building, environment and infrastructure design of the sites in Germany.

Be technical expert and have commercial acumen.

Act on behalf of CyrusOne towards local consultant team, suppliers, sub-contractors etc.

Review, but not responsible for, budgets together with the Development Manager for the Country

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

- Implement the CyrusOne standard design in Germany, coordinating compliant local adaptations and Director of Design approval of deviations.

- Maintain the project design-deviation register, tracking justification, impacts, approvals and implementation.

- Strive to adopt opportunities to increase the sustainability of the developed solutions and decrease the environmental impact of the business

- Assist the Site Selection team in evaluation of new brown/greenfield opportunities and production of the actual Master Planning

- Close cooperation with the Regional Construction Director and Commercial Lead to assess costing, lead times and quality

- Manage and track German design compliance with local consultants, preserving appointed designers’ statutory responsibilities

- Provide technical management of external/internal engineering consultants and A&E companies

- Coordinate design-related permitting, authority and utility interfaces, and resolution of approval conditions through local consultants.

- Technical responsible on Electrical or Mechanical activities/equipment in design, build and through commissioning phases

- Verify standard design alignment and local compliance through design, construction, commissioning and handover, tracking design non-conformances to closure

- When changes in a data centre are contemplated, prepare analyses of the current situation and the potential impact of the change. Provides detailed guidelines to the local team on implementing the change

- Periodically reviews and provision of suggested updates of the lessons learned on designs/constructions, field experience and technical development

- Supports investigations on technical incidents to report findings and root cause

- Provides functional guidance to local operational staff during changes that have large business impact

- Responsible for continuous improvements within own area of responsibility

Essential Knowledge:

- Extended knowledge in data center critical infrastructure’s design

- Understanding of data center construction is preferred

- Design change management and implementation

- Know-how of local current policies/requirements relevant for data center build’s

Background:

- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering

- Proficient in English and German (preferred)

- 10 years’ experience working within electrical or mechanical engineering

- Holds more than 5 years’ experience in engineering and construction projects

- Understanding of building management systems, mechanical engineering and civil structures and architecture is desirable

- Solid understanding of design, build and commissioning of Data Center is preferred

- Willingness to travel within Germany (sometimes outside business hours) and to travel immediately when circumstances so dictate
