JOB SUMMARY
The MacIsaac School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus, invites applications for three full-time (1.0 FTE) positions at the rank of Postdoctoral Fellow (Movember Institute Discovery Fellow) for a one-year term, renewable for up to five years subject to work performance, funding availability and the UBC approval process, as part of the Movember Institute of Men's Health Discovery Research Program. The Program is a major international investment in developing the next generation of men's health researchers and building research capacity in boys' and men's emotional and relational health.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will design, lead and deliver an independent five-year program of research focused primarily on underserved boys and young men aged 12-35. The research will address one or more of the Program's three themes: Coping and Consumption, Social Connection, and Early Fatherhood.
This is an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious early-career researcher to build their own research program with five years of funding security, senior mentorship, a dedicated research support allocation and a separately funded nested PhD Scholarship.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be based in the UBC MacIsaac School of Nursing and will report to and be mentored by Professor John Oliffe, the Movember Institute Professorial Fellow for Canada. They will have a high degree of independence in designing and leading their research program and will work independently within the five-year research plan. Co-supervision arrangements will be made where needed with the agreement of the Postdoctoral Fellow and Professor Oliffe. The three UBC-based Fellows will form the Canadian hub of the Discovery Research Program.
They will also join an international cohort of 11 Discovery Fellows working across Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States, with access to structured mentorship, professional development and international collaboration through the Movember Institute.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will liaise with faculty, trainees and staff across UBC, and with community, practice, policy and health system partners in British Columbia and nationally.
WORK PERFORMED
- Develop and deliver an agreed five-year Fellowship research plan and annual workplans, meeting agreed objectives, outputs and milestones, and meeting Fellowship reporting obligations including six-monthly progress reports to Movember.
- Design, conduct and lead intra- and inter-disciplinary research that advances knowledge and understanding of boys' and young men's emotional and relational health, and solutions to complex problems.
- Build a national and emerging international reputation through a focused body of work, with a target of two first-author peer-reviewed and/or other research outputs per year or an agreed equivalent, and communicate findings to the discipline and the community.
- Develop partnerships and collaborations with community, practice, policy and health system partners, including those working with underserved boys and young men, and support the translation of findings into services, policy and practice.
- Develop, write and lead applications for additional external post-doctoral scholarships and research funding to extend and sustain the research program.
- Contribute to the recruitment, development and day-to-day mentorship of the nested PhD Scholar, with formal supervisory arrangements determined according to UBC regulations and the incumbent's experience. May also mentor junior trainees and students.
- Participate actively in the Movember Institute's national and international research community, including fortnightly to monthly meetings with mentors, quarterly learning and development activities, cohort meetings and two international convenings during the Fellowship.
- Contribute to a respectful, inclusive and collaborative working environment.
- Perform other responsibilities as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is based at the UBC Vancouver campus. Regular in-person engagement with the Canadian hub is required. Domestic and international travel is required, including two international Discovery cohort convenings during the Fellowship; funding for required international travel is provided by the Movember Institute. Occasional work outside normal working hours is required to participate in global Program activities across time zones.
Relocation and day-to-day travel to the host university are at the Fellow's expense and are not an eligible expense against the annual research support allocation.
