Job Description
Safety is at the core of everything we build at Zoox. The Safety Reporting & Benchmarking team within Safety Strategy & Operations establishes rigorous frameworks to evaluate, benchmark, and report the safety performance of our autonomous driving fleet.
In this role, you will synthesize complex vehicle telemetry, simulation data, and operational safety metrics into actionable reports and dashboards. You will work closely with safety analysts, systems engineers, and operations leaders to objectively measure and elevate Zoox's safety standards against industry benchmarks.
In this Role, You Will…
- Analyze Fleet Safety Data: Investigate vehicle operational data, incident logs, and autonomy performance indicators to extract meaningful safety trends and insights.
- Benchmark Safety Metrics: Support benchmarking studies evaluating autonomous vehicle safety performance against peer standards, regulatory expectations, and internal thresholds.
- Build Reporting Dashboards: Design and maintain automated data pipelines, dashboards, and reporting artifacts used by safety leadership and cross-functional partners.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Safety Engineering, Systems Integration, and Fleet Operations to translate complex analytical findings into actionable safety mitigations.
Internship Requirements
- Currently pursuing a Master’s degree (or advanced degree) in Automotive Safety, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Data Analytics, or related technical discipline.
- Good academic standing and enrolled at an accredited college or university throughout the internship.
- Expected graduation date between Fall 2027 and Summer 2028.
- Able to commit to a full-time, 12-week internship.
- Ability to relocate to the Bay Area, California, for the duration of the internship.
- Interns at Zoox may not use proprietary information for thesis or publication outside of Zoox.
Technical Qualifications
- Strong background in safety engineering principles (e.g., occupant safety, system safety, risk analysis, or vehicle dynamics).
- Proficiency in quantitative data analysis and scripting (e.g., Python, SQL, or R).
- Experience building clear visual reports and dashboards using modern BI tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker, or Plotly/Dash).
- Solid grasp of statistical methods and ability to validate data integrity.
- Strong technical communication skills to explain safety data to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
Bonus Qualifications
- Prior coursework or project experience in autonomous vehicle safety frameworks (e.g., ISO 26262, SOTIF / ISO 21448).
- Experience working with automotive sensor data, crash telemetry, or simulation logs.
- Familiarity with mechatronics or vehicle chassis/occupant protection systems.
