Chevron is accepting online applications for the position Senior Communications Research and Impact Advisor through 11/20/2026 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time .
About the role
Chevron communicators make high-stakes decisions about reputation, advocacy, and employee engagement every day. This role shapes how evidence informs those decisions.
As the senior research and evaluation lead in Global Communications, you will set research priorities, develop the function’s approach to evaluating impact, and establish a regular read on how narratives are shifting. You will start with the work that matters most to the business and extend the practice across earned media, paid media, advocacy, and internal and leadership communications as it matures.
The role is hands-on. You will write instruments, analyze data yourself, and direct specialist partners when a project needs more expertise or fieldwork capacity. This is an individual contributor role.
About the team
Corporate Affairs manages social, political, and reputational risks for Chevron and engages the workforce to advance the business. Within Global Communications, the AI, Data & Insights team brings together research, intelligence, measurement, and insights to help communicators set priorities, sharpen strategy, anticipate issues, and understand how their work contributes to Corporate Affairs objectives.
We ground communications strategy in a deeper understanding of audiences and issues, provide intelligence to help teams anticipate and navigate the broader public affairs environment, and use measurement and insights to assess where communications are making a difference. Working across owned, earned, paid, and internal communications, we help teams make informed decisions, evaluate effectiveness, and focus their efforts where they can have the greatest impact.
What you will do
Shape the research agenda
- Establish and run a prioritized research and intelligence portfolio. Recommend scope, sequencing, and tradeoffs based on the decisions leaders need to make.
- Lead quantitative and qualitative studies end to end, from research questions through design, fieldwork, analysis, and recommendations.
- Set the standards for directing external research, evaluation, and intelligence partners, including clear briefs, methodological standards, confidentiality requirements, timelines, and budgets. Resolve delivery issues and manage scope changes with contract owners.
Establish impact evaluation
- Develop a consistent way to measure audience outcomes against communication objectives before priority work launches, including baselines, data sources, comparison groups, and timing.
- Build and refine shared methods for assessing the contribution of campaigns, programs, and channels within Chevron’s communications measurement framework. Work with analytics specialists to close gaps in attribution and comparability.
- Produce assessments that separate observed change, association, and causal evidence. State the uncertainty, name alternative explanations, and challenge conclusions the evidence does not support.
Extend research support across disciplines
- Paid media. Guide prelaunch message and creative testing and in-market effectiveness research with paid media and agency partners.
- Advocacy. Guide issue research, public opinion studies, and message testing in priority jurisdictions. Interpret results in the context of policy and stakeholder dynamics.
- Internal and leadership communications. Lead research on employee understanding of enterprise priorities, leadership messages, and change. Distinguish awareness, perceived understanding, and demonstrated comprehension.
- Earned media and reputation. Direct media and social analysis that connects audience research, competitive intelligence, and business context to spot shifts in narratives and stakeholder perceptions. Advise on responses and escalate significant findings to issue owners.
Grow shared research capability
- Create reusable survey instruments, media monitoring queries, measures, and review practices that teams across Global Communications can apply.
- Apply AI across the research process, from instrument design and qualitative coding to synthesis and media analysis, with validation and human review built in.
- Improve research methods, workflows, and tools as needs evolve.
- Align data requirements with analytics partners and build communicators’ ability to commission, read, and act on research.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, market research, social or behavioral sciences, statistics, business, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- 8 or more years in communications research, public opinion research, measurement and evaluation, or strategic intelligence, including leading complex programs from design to recommendation and directing external research partners.
- Experience supporting corporate communications or public affairs, in-house or at an agency or research firm, with a clear understanding of how communications strategies are developed and executed.
- Strong research skills across methods, including survey design, sampling, weighting, bias, and statistical uncertainty, and the design or critical review of interviews, focus groups, and open-ended responses.
- Hands-on experience with research platforms and providers such as Qualtrics, Morning Consult, and RepTrak, and the ability to analyze data directly.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate communications contribution: defining audience outcomes, choosing feasible evaluation designs, and judging what the evidence supports.
- Experience using media and social intelligence to interpret narratives and emerging issues, including judging query relevance, source coverage, automated classification, and the limits of audience inference. Sound news and public affairs judgment.
- Experience using AI tools in research and analysis, such as coding open-ended responses, synthesizing findings, or analyzing media coverage, with appropriate validation and human review.
- Experience building or significantly improving a research, insights, or evaluation practice, with evidence that other teams adopted it.
- Executive-ready writing and presentation skills, with a track record of research that changed senior leaders’ decisions.
Preferred qualifications
- In-house Corporate Affairs or Corporate Communications experience at a large company, including responsibility for developing or executing communications strategies or programs.
- Graduate degree in a research-intensive discipline.
- Research experience across several disciplines, such as earned media, paid media, advocacy, internal communications, or corporate reputation.
- Experience in energy or another industry with complex public policy and reputational issues.
- Experience working with legal, compliance, and privacy teams on research and intelligence activities.
- Established relationships with third-party research and media intelligence providers.
