About the Role:
Tubi is expanding its investment in emerging formats and next generation storytelling by partnering with the next generation of creators leveraging AI-assisted production. We believe technology is enabling a broader group of storytellers to be successful, and we want to be a great home and partner for this group to bring their ideas to Tubi’s global fan base, build new franchises, new story formats, and monetize their content. Our approach is creator-led and technology-enabled, with human creativity, compelling storytelling, and audience connection at the center.
Tubi is looking for a Senior Director, Next-Gen Studio to lead the creative heart of this effort. They will own identifying and onboarding promising stories, creators, and partners in the AI-assisted production space , and shaping them into shows that win real audiences among Tubi's 110 million monthly active users.
This is a role for someone who wants to build. In year one you will stand up a slate from the ground up, running a variety of concepts through a fast test-and-learn cycle where decisions are measured in weeks. You’ll bring a producer’s eye and instincts to the work: you possess the unique ability to combine the skillset of a development executive along with the capability to deeply understand (and be hands on) with AI creation tools. You also can handle budget authority, making clear calls about what gets made, doubling down on what’s working, and letting go of what isn’t.
The ideal candidate has deep respect for the craft of storytelling, and genuine conviction that new tools are about to expand what storytelling can be. They are energized by writing a new playbook rather than applying an old one.
This is a hybrid role based out of our New York or Los Angeles office. You must be willing to be in the office 2-3 days/week and travel as needed.
What You'll Do:
Own the slate and the creative bar
- Set the creative vision and slate strategy for Tubi's next-gen content portfolio, defining the category priorities and audience targets for this space.
- Identify, evaluate and greenlight concepts, scripts and creative teams; bringing a showrunner's judgment to what will land with a Tubi audience and what won't.
- Work with product and engineering teams on tools and products that will enable the story telling and make this the most fan centric platform for this next generation of story telling.
Own the budget
- Control budget allocation across the slate, including deciding which concepts get funded, at what level, and for how long. Possess a willingness to change course quickly based on what's working and what’s not.
- Partner closely with Finance on the slate P&L, including building and maintaining the forecast, tracking spend and performance against plan, pressure-testing the unit economics as real data comes in, and making the case for funding levels as the business scales.
Build the partner ecosystem
- Map and scout the global landscape of AI-native studios, tech companies, filmmakers, independent creators, aggregators and IP rights holders. Establish Tubi as the partner of choice in this space.
- Build and own creative relationships with those partners: identify who is worth betting on, shape what they make for us, and keep them wanting to bring us their best work first.
- Partner with Content Acquisition, Business and Legal Affairs, and creative partners to establish thoughtful approaches to intellectual property, creator rights, and responsible AI-assisted production.
- Develop a point of view on the AI production tool landscape and build relationships with leading model and platform partners to give Tubi early access and creative advantage.
Run the process
- Partner closely with Product to build and run a high-velocity development and testing cycle: validate concepts with audiences early, greenlight short orders, and iterate on signals.
- Develop the learning agenda for this content type. Identify the highest-value questions we need to answer about audiences, formats, partners and economics, and partner with Product and Data Science teams on experiments .
- Partner with the Data Science team to hold the slate to a clear performance bar, measured against our existing portfolio of content.
- Collaborate across Content, Creator, Operations, Product, Marketing, Finance and Legal to build the operating infrastructure this new content type requires.
- Start as an individual contributor with the potential to hire, lead and develop a small, scrappy, high-ownership team, and scale it as the model proves out.
- Represent Tubi credibly to the creative community as a company that takes storytelling seriously and is building this thoughtfully and responsibly.
Your Background:
- You possess a unique combination of demonstrated fluency with AI-assisted content creation along with 12+ years in content development, production, or content acquisition. You have made things with these tools, backed people who do, or built a serious point of view on where the capability frontier is and how fast it is moving.
- The judgment to choose the right projects and the craft to improve them. You can assess a script or a cut, articulate what’s working and what isn’t, and collaborate with a creator to improve it.
- Knowledge and curiosity of the AI studio and AI-assisted creator landscape, hands-on tinkering with tools, and existing relationships within it. You know who the serious players are, and which emerging creators are worth watching.
- Experience owning a content budget and allocating it. You have made real funding calls across a slate, defended them, and changed them when the evidence changed.
- Strong partner instincts. You have sourced and built creative relationships, and you are an effective collaborator with business affairs and acquisition teams who lead the negotiations.
- Comfort operating with speed and ambiguity. You have built something from zero, you make decisions on incomplete information, and you are willing to cancel your own projects when the data says so.
- Strong data literacy, with the ability to combine creative instincts and audience insights to inform development decisions and build programming that resonates with viewers.
- A genuine feel for digital-native audiences and the subcultures and fandoms that form around them.
- Thoughtful about the creative, ethical and rights questions this space raises, and credible with traditional creative talent as well as with the emerging AI-native community.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to make the case for a creative bet to senior stakeholders.
