About the role
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Engineer (Edge – Networking & Fleet) based in Spain.
As a Software Engineer specializing in Edge networking and fleet infrastructure, you will build and scale the systems that power a large residential device network used for web data extraction. You will work across distributed control planes, data planes, networking services, and fleet management capabilities, helping transform thousands of devices into reliable, production-grade infrastructure. Your work will focus on building a scalable scheduling platform, improving proxy services, and managing devices across Windows, Android, and Linux environments. Collaborating with senior engineers and partner teams, you will tackle complex distributed-systems challenges involving reliability, performance, and network communication. This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership of critical infrastructure in a remote-first engineering environment.
Accountabilities
-
Scale the existing data plane by evolving the command-and-control service into a horizontally scalable fetch scheduler capable of handling 50–100 million requests per day.
-
Design and build the Fleet Manager control plane, including provider adapters, inventory and health management, configuration, reconciliation, software rollout control, and metrics export to BigQuery.
-
Develop provider integrations that allow additional device sources to be onboarded through standardized workflows rather than bespoke scripts.
-
Own and improve the CONNECT proxy gateway, edge session management, IP reputation, proxy leases, and request scheduling in collaboration with other engineering teams.
-
Engineer secure and reliable networking between control services and residential peers using mTLS, gRPC, long-polling, and streaming over unreliable connections.
-
Address networking challenges involving NAT, carrier-grade NAT, bandwidth accounting, connection reliability, and resource contention.
-
Define and maintain service-level objectives for availability, request success, and latency across the Edge route.
-
Build observability and operational metrics covering peer availability, device drop-off, bandwidth usage, and provider performance.
-
Implement safe blue/green deployments and software rollouts for control services and edge peers.
-
Participate in the on-call rotation, lead incident post-mortems, and translate operational findings into improvements.
-
Produce technical design documents and recommendations for scheduling, fleet management, and failover strategies.
-
Review technical designs and promote distributed-systems best practices, including consistency, backpressure, idempotency, and limiting failure impact.
Requirements:
-
At least 5 years of professional Rust experience, including building, deploying, and operating production services end to end.
-
Demonstrated experience designing and operating distributed systems, such as schedulers, control planes, or stateful services at scale.
-
Strong understanding of distributed-systems concepts, including consistency, network partitions, backpressure, and idempotency.
-
Deep networking knowledge covering TCP, TLS, HTTP, connection handshakes, and packet-level behavior.
-
Practical experience with gRPC and long-lived connections across NAT environments and unreliable networks.
-
Experience building or operating forward proxies, proxy gateways, or residential/ISP proxy infrastructure.
-
Understanding of IP reputation, session stickiness, proxy pool health, and traffic routing.
-
Production operations experience, including defining SLOs and error budgets, building observability, leading incident response, and participating in on-call rotations.
-
Familiarity with cross-platform Rust development targeting Windows, Linux, and Android, including foreign function interface (FFI) boundaries where needed.
-
Strong written communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a globally distributed, remote-first team.
-
Curiosity, analytical thinking, and a practical approach to investigating system behavior under load and resolving underlying causes.
Technical environment:
-
Languages: Rust (Tokio, Tonic), C++ (Cronet), Python, and Java.
-
Protocols: gRPC, Protocol Buffers, mTLS, HTTP CONNECT, Chromium networking stack, and browserless HTTP clients.
-
Infrastructure: Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Kubernetes, Terraform, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), and data center environments.
-
Data and messaging: Valkey, BigQuery, and Confluent Kafka.
-
Monitoring and observability: Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, and OpenTelemetry.
Nice to have:
-
Experience deploying Rust applications on Android, Windows, or macOS.
-
Experience integrating Rust with C or C++ through FFI.
-
Background in fleet or device management, including reconciliation systems, rollout controllers, IoT, or volunteer-computing fleets.
-
Knowledge of anti-bot technologies, browser fingerprinting, and how TLS, HTTP, and IP signals are used to classify traffic.
-
Familiarity with large-scale web scraping, crawling, and web data extraction.
-
Contributions to open-source projects involving Rust, networking, or distributed systems.
Benefits:
-
Remote-first flexibility: Freedom to work from the location where you are most productive.
-
Flexible working hours: Autonomy to organize your schedule within a high-trust working environment.
-
International collaboration: Join a multicultural, globally distributed team of engineers and data specialists.
-
Global team events: Opportunities to attend conferences and meet colleagues from around the world.
-
Modern technology: Work with cutting-edge open-source technologies and tools.
-
Technical impact: Solve complex engineering challenges involving large-scale networking, distributed systems, and web data infrastructure.
-
Professional growth: Opportunities to deepen your expertise while contributing to a growing, technically ambitious platform.
