About the role

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer, Development Health based in India.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to strengthen the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of engineering systems and internal developer tools. In this role, you will design, maintain, and evolve critical backend services, automation frameworks, and data-driven solutions that help engineering teams work more effectively. You will contribute to improving CI/CD pipelines, identifying flaky and slow tests, and developing engineering analytics that support better technical decisions. Working closely with engineering managers and cross-functional teams, you will transform operational challenges into measurable improvements. You will also leverage AI-powered development tools to accelerate problem-solving and drive innovation. This is an opportunity to join a fully remote, collaborative, and documentation-driven engineering environment where your work directly enhances developer productivity and software delivery.

Accountabilities:

- Own the design, development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of core Development Health systems, from initial implementation through production operations.

- Build and enhance backend services, automation tools, and internal platforms that improve engineering workflows and developer productivity.

- Develop and maintain health monitoring, alerting, and remediation routing systems for critical CI/CD pipelines.

- Improve automated systems for detecting flaky tests, slow-running tests, and other issues affecting engineering efficiency.

- Contribute to engineering analytics, reporting solutions, and data-driven tools that help teams monitor performance and make informed decisions.

- Improve the reliability, maintainability, and test coverage of existing automation systems while modernizing legacy codebases and simplifying complex workflows.

- Collaborate with engineering managers, product teams, and other stakeholders to identify operational challenges and translate them into clearly defined, measurable improvements.

- Analyze engineering metrics and system performance data to evaluate the impact of changes and prioritize future enhancements.

- Mentor and support intermediate engineers through code reviews, technical design discussions, knowledge sharing, and collaborative development.

- Monitor production system health, investigate technical incidents, troubleshoot issues, and participate in root cause analysis.

- Communicate technical decisions, project progress, risks, and proposed solutions clearly through written and asynchronous collaboration.

- Leverage AI agents and coding assistants to investigate issues, identify improvement opportunities, accelerate development, and contribute to product roadmap discussions.

Requirements:

- Substantial professional experience as a Backend Engineer, Software Engineer, or Tooling Engineer, with a proven track record of owning and maintaining production systems throughout their lifecycle.

- Strong proficiency in Ruby or the ability to become productive with the language quickly.

- Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and safely modernizing established or legacy codebases.

- Solid understanding of CI/CD systems, APIs, backend development, and large-scale automation.

- Experience designing and implementing automated unit and integration tests to ensure software reliability and maintainability.

- Familiarity with collaborative software development practices, including code reviews, technical design discussions, and continuous improvement.

- Practical experience using AI-powered coding assistants to improve development efficiency, with the ability to critically assess generated code and validate its quality.

- Strong independent problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify potential issues, communicate risks proactively, and drive projects to completion with minimal supervision.

- Excellent written communication skills, particularly in asynchronous and distributed working environments.

- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, technical leaders, and stakeholders across different teams and locations.

- A proactive, analytical, and results-oriented mindset, combined with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

Additional experience considered an advantage:

- Experience with Ruby on Rails.

- Background in developer productivity, engineering analytics, or internal developer tooling.

- Familiarity with GitLab or similar DevOps platforms and open-source contribution workflows.

- Experience building and maintaining data pipelines, engineering metrics, and reporting solutions.

- Knowledge of AI agent-based workflows and experience operating them in production environments.

Benefits:

- Flexible Paid Time Off: Enjoy flexible paid leave to support personal needs, rest, and work-life balance.

- Remote Working Environment: Work remotely within the applicable country-based hiring requirements.
