Purpose
The IT Portfolio Manager ensures that the global IT project and change portfolio is well governed, strategically aligned, and delivers measurable business value. While the role requires a structured and disciplined approach to portfolio processes, it equally demands a pragmatic, content-oriented mindset. The IT Portfolio Manager must be able to look beyond the process, understand the substance of the initiatives, and actively engage with project managers and business stakeholders to drive outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Manage the IT portfolio lifecycle, including intake, prioritization, resource allocation, execution monitoring, and benefit realization.
- Balance process discipline with practical delivery, ensuring governance adds value and does not create unnecessary overhead.
- Provide portfolio transparency and insights through clear, actionable reporting and analysis (financial, risk, resource, and progress).
- Act as a sparring partner to project managers, providing both guidance and challenge on content, scope, and interdependencies.
- Work closely with the Director Change & Projects and IT Leadership to translate strategy into an executable, balanced portfolio.
- Own portfolio governance processes, while continuously improving them for simplicity, transparency, and impact.
- Monitor and control budgets, ensuring financial integrity and early identification of variances.
- Escalate risks and issues proactively, offering solutions and alternatives rather than only reporting problems.
- Facilitate portfolio reviews with leadership, enabling clear prioritization and decision-making.
- Basic Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, or related field.
- 8+ years of experience in IT project and portfolio management within a global and distributed enterprise environment.
- Hands-on involvement in large transformation programs, carve-outs, or complex integrations.
- Familiarity with SAP-centric landscapes is a strong advantage.
- Solid financial and analytical skills, with a proven ability to control budgets and assess value realization.
- Advanced skills in portfolio management and reporting tools (e.g., Clarity PPM, MS Project Online, ServiceNow, or equivalents) as well as Excel.
Preferred Characteristics
- Pragmatic and content-driven: able to understand the substance of projects and not limit impact to processes and templates.
- Balanced mindset: combines governance and control with hands-on engagement and problem-solving.
- Strong communicator: conveys portfolio insights with clarity to executives and provides actionable guidance to delivery teams.
- Resilient and decisive: navigates ambiguity and competing priorities with confidence.
- Collaborative: builds strong relationships across IT teams, business stakeholders, and geographies.
